Making Two Mallets, Two Different Ways
I needed to make two smaller mallets for fine chisel work. The two mallets that I've been using are just a little to big. I had also gotten a bunch of veritas hand tools for Christmas and I really wanted a project just for them! Hope you enjoy the video!

Restoring a Broken Box From 1937

I am restoring a old red cedar box that was smashed in a break in. The box belongs to a 90 year old women named Ina. She received the box as a souvenir from Niagara falls in 1937. The box was given to her by her father when she was 11 or 12 years old. I have returned the box to Ina and she was very happy to get a piece of her child hood back! I just started making these. I wanted to use pin nails, along with the glue, to hold the slates down but also add the nail holes for realism. However, the material altogether is less than a 1/2" so the nails were a no go. What I did instead was take the nails out of the nail gun and just dry fire where the nails would go. The driving pin of the nail gun added a slight hole which then gets accentuated by whatever finish I put on, giving me the illusion of real nails. Love the look of the walnut and bubinga pallets.

    Great job! I’ve made ‘stove top’ or ‘noddle boards’ out of laminate flooring. Great thing, no finish other than wax to protect stencil wording.

    I have a box from Pakistan 🇵🇰 with inlaid detail and made of sheesham wood from the early 90’s ... with a brass lock ... it’s not an antique but the skills and artistry gone into it is second to none , I would be heartbroken if I ever lost it , that poor lady I hope she’s ok 👌

    In My opinion your not edge banding properly causing it to not stick properly. You have to think of it as hot glue, as it melts it immediately wants to dry up so as it melts you have to apply pressure with a block or roller. The best way is to apply the iron for 7 seconds then move a full iron length with a block in the other hand applying pressure to the edge band right behind the iron

    I'd have to question the durability of this? Does it not crack or come away from the plywood?

    • @enjoy9772
      @enjoy9772 3 роки тому

      Yea, it will definitely crack and have issues if it's not sanded to where it just fills voids.

    I use gyprock cement (don't know if that's what it's called in the US) and apply with a painter's filler blade and sand with a block sander - machine a little too aggressive for edges. Finish with a Greco 395 air assist with a fine tip. Yeah that's over kill I know, but it's fun and I own a couple from my painting days. Cheers from Aus.
